Photographers' Gallery

A message appeared on the studio desktop a couple of weeks ago from the newly re-launched Photographers' Gallery's Curator of Digital Programming, Katrina Sluis.

'Hi - would you like to produce an animated GIF in seven days for the Photographers' Gallery's new digital wall?'  A crash course of research into the history of the GIF - the Graphic Interchange Format - and several days later I have produced my first animated GIF.

'Born in 1987: the animated GIF' is the opening project for the Photographers' Gallery's new digital wall. The 'wall' consists of a digital display made up of eight large screens on which are shown a running programme of animated GIFS created especially for the gallery's re-launch,

The Photographers' Gallery re-launched in central London this week with opening exhibits by Canadian Photographer Edward Burtynsky and an installation by the New Delhi-based Raqs Media Collective. The new, expanded Photographers' Gallery is spread over 5 floors, with a new project spaces, three floors of gallery space, a Camera Obscura, a bookstore and cafe. The re-opening of this, London's only space dedicated to the promotion of the medium, has been much anticipated.

As you enter the large glass doors of the re-modelled building, the first thing that you will see is not one of Edward Burtynsky's hyper-real images (his major environmental project 'Oil' is the gallery's opening show) but, the gallery's newly appointed digital wall. This positioning, alongside Sluis' appointment as the gallery's new curator of digital programming, is recognition that it is in the digital and social domain that photography must, ultimately, discover its new purposes and new meaning.

In keeping with the playful nature of the medium, just over 40 artists were asked to produce a moving image GIF in just over one week for the 'Born in 1987' project. Many of the artists involved had never produced a GIF - or indeed used moving image - before, but my guess is that many will do so again. Although playful in nature (as Daniel Rubenstein says in his commissioned essay for the project) the GIF, with its inherent emphasis on 'rhythm and repetition, has something comical about it'. The blinking low-fi GIF is also a reminder of just how fast the evolution from our static screens of the early 80's to the image-saturated and animated digital environment of today has been.

It is fascinating to watch these stuttering images, often forced into unexpected arrangements by artists who more often work in the closed loop of a high-res environment. Here, we are all forced to work in an entirely different domain - what is essentially the social and political space of the semantic web.

Ultimately, Sluis hopes, she says 'to shed light on the relationship between the cultural languages of the photographic image and the language of computer programming and code…. to understand how the cultural meanings of images in circulation'

This offers up an exciting prospect for a new generation of artists whose native relationship to online culture dictates that this must surely be their new frontier. The digital domain is, by it's very nature, an essentially unknowable space of constantly shifting horizons. And as such, it's pretty damned exciting.

  1. There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game. Both boys and girls feel the impact of just a moment?s pleasure, for the rest of their lives.

    1. IEEE Project Domain management in software engineering is distinct from traditional project deveopment in that software projects have a unique lifecycle process that requires multiple rounds of testing, updating, and faculty feedback. A IEEE Domain project Final Year Projects for CSE system development life cycle is essentially a phased project model that defines the organizational constraints of a large-scale systems project. The methods used in a IEEE DOmain Project systems development life cycle strategy Project Centers in Chennai For CSE provide clearly defined phases of work to plan, design, test, deploy, and maintain information systems.

This is enough for me. I want to write software that anyone can use, and virtually everyone who has an internet connected device with a screen can use apps written in JavaScript. JavaScript Training in Chennai JavaScript was used for little more than mouse hover animations and little calculations to make static websites feel more interactive. Let’s assume 90% of all websites using JavaScript use it in a trivial way. That still leaves 150 million substantial JavaScript Training in Chennai JavaScript applications.

  6. Ok, I ordered My Pillows and absolutely hated them. I didnt send them back I put them in my guest room so my guest wouldn't stay that long. lol That being said, I sleep on a 1,000 dollar Casper mattress. It is very hard and I like the mattress but I needed a softer top. So I ordered a down pillow top, quilted, for making it just right. It was for about a week then it started pocketing and no matter how much I fluffed it the low spots developed and stiff back and neck resulted. So why am I telling you all this when the review is supposed to be about the My Pillow Topper? Because you need to know where I am coming from. I hate My Pillow, I hate his numerous commercials, I just am not a fan nor others in my family. Those two pillows got passed around everyone before ending in the guest room. Too thick, too firm and way uncomfortable. Now I read reviews on this topper and even though I think Mike is not my pal, I gave it a shot. I ordered a queen to fit my Casper Mattress and I am very pleased! I have my 75% duck down feather pillow, and when I sleep, it's like floating on a cloud in Heaven. The topper fit easily and the 4 straps slide under the mattress and stayed put. It's firm but soft. It cuddles your form perfectly and it's so comforting. You will be so happy when you try it. I weigh 235 at 5' 10". Have no problems at all and when you get off in the morn it instantly springs back. Does not pocket. I will tell you it is cool as a cucumber. Does not store your heat. Whatever your room is at winter or summer the topper stays indifferent and unchanging. I do recommend using a good micro fiber water proof but breathable cover. Any foam will be a breeding ground for dust mites. Its not like you can wash the topper so you can wash a cover. Enjoy, I hope my heartfelt, honest opinion helps and doesn't offend.

  7. So initial reactions, I did a lot of research when looking for a bike that suits me. I'm 5' ft tall, exactly, 60 cms, I'm a petite adult woman. It's really close to impossible for me to enjoy the Limebikes and other services outside in the Boston area so I had to commit and buy a bike that suits my small height.

The minty green is adorable, perfect for what I was expecting, the quality and sturdiness is very obviously there. The assembly was quite irritating -- it was partially put together (which they don't notate is standard for the Around the Block bikes) so following the manual was basically redundant. The saving grace was YouTube and all the assembly videos present to help me along. It's a heavy bike and you may need two people to help adjust things as you put it together. Overall though I love the appearance, I bought a mint basket to match the bike, which will be helpful during my commute.

So I bought the 24' because I read the reviews and woes of other smaller woman struggling with the 26'. Their website says 5-6ft for the 26'. It's an utter lie. I'm BARELY holding on to the 24' then it occurred to me, it's not necessarily about height (we are not all cookie cutter humans) its about your LEG LENGTH. I have a long torso and short legs, I'm happy I chose the 24' because it's literally the only choice I had, I have to be on my tippy toes with it as is, but it rides. If I got the 26', I would have to wear platforms to ride the bike. If you're short and have similar proportions, you may want to consider disregarding their suggestion and getting the 24'. There was another reviewer that said she regretted keeping her 26' at 5'1 because she could not reach comfortable. So beware! Also, there is a weight limit of 198 lbs for the 24' tires, something to consider as well if you're overweight and trying to use this bike to get fit, someone heavier than me sat and the bike did not move well. I don't know how they say 300lbs, that seems really insane to me.

As far as assembly suggestions, the constant swivel of the seat can be fixed, you just have to get yourself a ratchet and or crescent wrench and turn those suckers SUPER tightly. Their tools provided are AWFUL. Use your own. As far as the seat lever goes, make sure you grease it too. I found myself building it on a carpet because it helped protect the bike from scuffs as I haphazardly carried it during my assembly.

I will update after usage during my commute to see how it lasts. I have high hopes!

  9. I saw a project that recommended this yarn online. I had previous purchased another company's miniature yarn bundles which were available in a fabric store. Those were nice, but this yarn pack offers a wide variety of color, lovely packaging and the feel of the yarn while crocheting and knitting is so soft, even though it is an acrylic yarn! I didn't know what to expect, but will definitely purchase from this company again.
